Nigeria Woman jailed for 10 years for smuggling 5kg of marijuana to Dubai

A Nigerian woman was sentenced to 10 years in jail for attempting to smuggle more than five kilograms of marijuana.
The 24-year-old was arrested on May 22 at Dubai International Airport after customs inspectors discovered the drugs in one of her bags.
"She said the bag did not belong to her, but to a man in her country who asked her to deliver it to a compatriot in Dubai," said a female customs inspector who told police a man was waiting for the defendant in Al Muraqqabat. Police arrested the man after watching him for more than five hours.
Officers said he confessed to being offered Dh1,000 in return for picking up a bag from the woman and delivering it to a countryman in Ajman. The pair denied charges of possessing drugs to sell, while the man denied an additional charge of consuming drugs.
"The bag doesn’t belong to me and I don’t know who placed the drugs inside it," said the woman.

The man, 23, told judges that the traces of drugs found in his body were from medicine he had been prescribed. He was also sentenced to 10 years in jail. The pair were fined Dh50,000 each and will be deported after serving their jail terms.
The verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
