A former Nigerian Ambassador, Humphrey Orjiako has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and his team appointed to mediate in the Gambia electoral brouhaha, to explore all possible means to solve the problem so as to avert war in the country. Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has earlier said he is ready to defend his country against any aggression after refused to concede victory.
“The Authority of ECOWAS should negotiate for a peaceful transition of power in the Gambia. What they must avoid is anything that can escalate the crisis. It is in nobody’s interest to start sending ECOWAS troops and forces that may not bring the desired result except to escalate the problem. They should explore all avenues before before applying anything like force,” he said.
He lamented that the situation has become a phenomenon in African politics, adding it is a bad omen for the continent.
“You know, this problem with African leaders is becoming worrisome and totally unfortunate. It is not serving Africa well. I think the President of Nigeria and his counterparts need to manage the situation well as this is a new democratic era. The first decision to concede election was a correct one.
If Jammeh refuses to concede, he should understand that Gambia is a signatory to all ECOWAS protocol concerning this matter,” he added.
