UNILAG Student Arrested For Fraud


A final year student of the University of Lagos (Unilag) was yesterday, arraigned before an Ebute-metta Magistrate's Court, Lagos, for alleged N2.6million fraud by the Police from State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), of Lagos State.
The final year student identified as Adewunmi Johnson is facing a five counts charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining under false pretense, stealing, issuing of dud cheques, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Police alleged that the 35-year-old Adewunmi, a final year student in the Department of Marine Sciences, and one John Udoka, 34, had on September 29, 2015, at about 11.30am, within the premises of Unilag, received the sum of N2.640 million from one Ogundana Bolanle, under the pretense of supplying her 20 tonnes of sharp sand.

Adewunmi, who issued a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), cheque with number 70304419, dated December 9, 2016, in favour of Sea Joy Enterprises, to the tune of N600, 000,00, was returned when presented at a bank in Ikorodu, for lack of insufficient funds.
He was further alleged to have acted in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace, by harassing the said Ogundana Bolanle at a construction site in UNILAG.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the counts. Consequently, the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. K. A. Ariyo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two sureties in the same sum.

One of the sureties according to the prosecutor must be a blood relation to the defendant, with three years tax payable to the Lagos State government. The matter has been adjourned till February 15, 2017.
