Ebonyi Police impounds 50 vehicles over tinted permit

Ebonyi State Police Command has impounded over 50 vehicles from motorists using vehicles with tinted glasses following their inability to provide evidence of ownership of tinted-permits.

Speaking to The Guardian in an interview, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jude Madu disclosed that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah led the stop and search operation.

“The essence of the exercise was to let people know the importance of having genuine documents and documents covering their tinted vehicles. It’s also to alert Motorcycle operators that the ban on using dual carriageways is still in force and they are further reminded that the Okada riders are not supposed to ply after 7pm,” said the Police image-maker.

DSP Madu disclosed that those whose vehicles were impounded for lack of tinted permit were arrested and taken to the SIB of the command.

“Those arrested were issued with their tinted permits at zero cost. It gave the police extra man-hours to stay behind till late midnight to issue them with their permits. Some of them we interviewed complained that they don’t have time and money to do it.

But we want the public to know that it is free.”

He said the police are now emphasizing the use of tinted glass because the command has discovered that the use of tinted vehicles is an avenue that criminals use to perpetrate their nefarious activities such as kidnapping and armed robbery.

“When they buy these factory-fitted cars with tinted permits, some of them will buy tinted papers and cover everywhere. So, if somebody is kidnapped, the person might be inside the vehicle, you will not know and they can drive that person to a neighboring state but you will not know.

“So, if you have these tinted permits and it’s reported that a particular vehicle was seen and it’s suspected of being involved and we have the number, all we need to do is to key the number of that vehicle into our computer system and we will get the complete data of that person easily,” the PPRO informed.

On measures taken to ensure a crime-free Christmas, DSP Madu assured that based on the measures, which the CP has put in place, Ebonyians would sleep with their two eyes closed.
