3 Killed in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, Kaduna State

Three people were shot dead and several others wounded on Tuesday evening by suspected Fulani militiamen at Samaru Kataf Market in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Sources said the incident occurred at about 6.30pm when the gunmen who made their way into the market on a motorcycle opened fire on traders and fled.

Efforts to get both the local government Chairman and Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer for comments as at the time of filing this report were futile. Meanwhile, security operatives have been mobilised to the area to prevent possible reprisal attack, the source said.

Zangon Kataf is in the southern part of the state, an area riddled with ugly incidents of bloody attack in one place or the other for months now, despite peace accord reached between Fulani and indigenous people of the area.

It would be recalled that, worried by the orgy of destruction of lives and property arising from the ethno crisis, the immediate past Head of military government, General Abdulsalami Abubakar had visited the area with members of his peace committee and discussed peace with the warring groups.
Prior to the former Head of State’s visit, the Inspector -General of Police had been there and held a whole day meeting the people who agreed to put the past behind and live in peace.
However, Southern Kaduna is yet to know and enjoy peace even with the presence of military and para-military personnel drafted there to ensure peace and stability.
